Brian Ferentz Will Not Return As Iowa's Offensive Coordinator Next Season And I Am Sad

Damn, I wanted him to be around forever. Brian Ferentz will go down as being perhaps the worst offensive coordinator that college football has seen in recent memory. I’m sure some offensive coordinators had less talent or scored fewer points, but the fact that Iowa kept continually employing this guy when it was a poorly kept secret that they had arguably the worst offense in college football was amazing. His tenure is not officially over yet, though. There’s still a very slim chance he reaches that 25 points per game threshold, but he’s a dead man walking. He’ll finish out the remainder of the season and then move on. 

Will this matter? Yes, Brian Ferentz was a hack who should not have been an offensive coordinator, but is Kirk Ferentz going to bring in somebody who will light the previous scheme on fire? I have serious doubts about that. As bad as that Iowa offense is, they're continually winning 7 to 10 games a year. I don’t think they’re going to rock the boat too much. 

While Iowa fans will not remember Brian Ferentz as a good offensive coordinator, it's not like he's an awful football mind. He was remarkably successful as an offensive line coach. It's why I don't necessarily blame him for everything that's happened. He should've never had the role, and he was employed for way too long. This falls more on the head coach than it does on the offensive coordinator. Kirk Ferentz gets a free pass at Iowa. 

Even though they have the worst offense in the country, there is still a pathway for Iowa to make it to Indianapolis and play for the Big Ten championship, where they would obviously get obliterated. The further this goes, the happier I am with conference expansion. The fact that we have teams like Iowa and Nebraska, who have legitimate chances to play for a conference championship, shows that the conference needs a lot more parity. We're going to get it. Sadly, Brian Ferentz will not be a part of it.
