How To Fix Tipping Culture In America

We all know tipping culture in America has gotten out of hand. Bartenders, servers, and some others still definitely deserve 20% or more. But there are other jobs where a line has to be drawn. If I go get an already overpriced $7 iced coffee, I shouldn't have to add another $2 to that total. If I'm at a self service check out station, I'm not tipping someone else for a job that I quite literally did myself. And if I take a cab ride somewhere, I'm not tipping the driver for doing something I literally could've done myself. I have a license. I know how to drive. You shouldn't get a trophy for doing something that you learn how to do when you're 16 years old.

That's why I've stopped tipping drivers and started tipping commercial airline pilots. Flying a plane across the country? Now that's difficult. That's a challenge. That's worth a tip. Something I could have never done in a million years by myself without taking down the whole plane. Cab drivers get paid enough already, especially in New York City. Expecting a tip is borderline selfish and greedy. But pilots need to feed their families, and I'm happy to help support them. And while we're on the topic of flying can we please for the love of God make flight attendants hot again?
