Damian Lillard Celebrates Big Trade By Divorcing Wife

NY Post - The seven-time NBA All-Star filed for divorce from his college sweetheart on Oct. 2 — less than a week after he was traded from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks, according to the Portland-based Willamette Week.

The filing cited “irreconcilable differences” that “caused the irremediable breakdown” of the now-former couple’s union.

I've never really understood why marriage works the way it does in America. It's seemed outdated to me as long as I can remember. When we love somebody, why do we need to show it by signing some sort of binding contract that will bury you in paperwork, litigation, and financial stress in the event you decide to split. I know that's a very dumbed down way of looking at things, it just seems like if 50% of marriages end in divorce we shouldn't make the process such a fucking nightmare.

So congratulations on the trade Damian. And congratulations on the divorce. Divorce doesn't have to be a bad thing. It can be a great thing. The start of a new chapter in life. Lillard went from being tied down in the war zone of Portland, Oregon, to being a single man in Milwaukee, Wisconsin - the pussy capital of the world.

To be honest, the timeline of their relationship doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The two of them have been together since college, meaning they've been together for over 10 years. They were together all throughout Lillard's NBA career. But they didn't finally get married until 2021. And in 2023 the marriage ended. Not necessarily a ringing endorsement of marriage. I have to imagine he's kicking himself to finally giving in and doing the damn thing.

There doesn't appear to be any information as to why they've decided to split, other than the article citing "irreconcilable differences". Maybe his wife hates Wisconsin. She could be lactose intolerant. Or maybe fell in love with Portland's autonomous zone and can't imagine living anywhere else. Hard to say.

However, if you're a Milwaukee Bucks fan, the Lillard's divorce should be great news. Athletes historically play great following a divorce.

MT Law - According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, if you're an athlete looking to step up your game simply get a divorce! As Kobe Bryant slogs through a nasty divorce there's reason to believe that his playing won't suffer at all. On the contrary, statistics show that other star players have actually performed better following their courtroom battles.

One recent example was last year's divorce between Tony Parker and Eva Longoria. The divorce battle was public and painful, yet his numbers on the court improved. In 2009-2010, Parker averaged 16points and 5.7 assists per-game. This year those numbers increased to 17.5 points and 6.6 assists as his team went on to a Western Conference-best 61-21 season.

Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade dragged himself through a nearly three year long fight with his ex-wife which was only finalized in 2010. During the ordeal he continued to score over 25 points per game.Steve Nash led the NBA in assists both the season before and the season after his marriage ended. After enduring a breakup in 2007, Jason Kidd improved his assist numbers. Vince Carter's stats also went up during the 2006-07 season.

That's a pretty solid track record for recently divorced NBA players. Maybe Damian Lillard is just buckling down and finally getting serious about winning a ring. A few more points per game, maybe some additional assists, a couple more steals, that can make all the difference in a 7 game series. With a couple years left on his contract too, now's the perfect time to step his game up. Lillard has at least one more 9 figure bag left in him. And now that he's divorced he might not even have to cough up half of the next one.
