Field Goals Longer Than 55 Yards In High School Should Be Worth 6 Points

I love watching high school football. At the upper levels, it has much of the passion and traditions of the college game but is far more unpredictable and produces wild clips that you just can't get from college or professional football.

There's also a massive talent disparity between kids that are high-level recruits and ones that are just playing football because they love the game and need something to do after school, which is fun to watch. Sure, the games on ESPN between all the top teams in the country are great, but I really want to see a 5-star edge rusher go up against a 5'11", 190-pound offensive tackle.

That talent gap is particularly noticeable at the kicker position, where some schools have a guy like Spencer Barnett nailing 59-yard field goals while other coaches would go for it on 4th and 14 at the 23-yard line because their kicker couldn't dream of reaching the crossbar from 40 yards out.

It kinda seems like bullshit that a 59-yarder in HIGH SCHOOL counts the same as some piddling 24-yard kick that was spinning sideways, though. If you can hit a field goal from beyond 55 yards at 16 years old, that should count as six points.

How many kids in the country could do that with any degree of regularity, anyway? Five? If you have one of those five kickers, you should be able to use him to make a real difference in a game. Imagine watching a state championship game where Westlake is down four with 30 seconds left and has to decide whether to go for it on 4th and short or kick a 57-yarder? Electric.
