Today, Dylan Moore Got Thrown Out At First...FROM LEFT FIELD
Oh man, this is a rough one. We don’t see this in baseball very often. But when we do, it’s just glorious.
I feel bad for Dylan Moore. I mean, the guy should’ve ran the ball out. So I can’t cry for him too much, but this is one of those things where if you get popped for it, you’re going to be remembered for the rest of your career as being the guy that got thrown out at first base from left field.
We’ve seen hitters get thrown out from right before. To be honest, I’m a little surprised it doesn’t happen more often. I’ve seen line drives to right where the right fielder just kind of eats the ball. If you have a good right fielder playing shallow, I feel like the possibility of throwing out a runner at first is a legitimate thing, especially if you have a slow runner.
This play is very reminiscent of the infamous Sean Casey play when he was with the Tigers. I remember that one vividly. Casey hit a rope that he thought was caught by Joe Crede. He starts walking back to the dugout and gets thrown out from left field. Sean Casey had an awesome career and is currently the Yankees hitting coach, but it's hard not to remember him for this.
I don't know if it was the intent of the Royals' left fielder, but he sold this play really well. Even upon my first watch, I thought that maybe he caught it. The way that he casually gets up and chucks the ball to the first baseman just added to the hilarity.
These are the funniest kinds of baseball oddities to me. You know Dylan Moore knows that he fucked up. Coaches preach all the time that you have to run the ball out regardless of where you think it's going to end up. If you put the ball in play, anything can happen. But let's be real, 99.99% of the time, the result of the play is inevitable. This is just one of those glorious circumstances where everything lines up. A player makes a mistake, and he ends up looking foolish.
It's too bad because I will write another blog about the Mariners at some point. They've been playing much better baseball. Julio Rodriguez has been crazy hot the last several days. But this moment is absolutely worth writing a blog about. I'm sure Dylan Moore is going to own it after the game. He's had a nice little year for the Mariners. I don't want to knock the guy too much, but this was hilarious.
