After Five Long Years Travis Scott's New Album Utopia Is Finally Dropping Tonight And We Already Know A Few Of The Features
I grew up on hip-hop and it's probably still the most played genre of music when I'm driving around in my car. And that is the true test of what you love. I listen to everything (seriously from metal, to country, to hip-hop, to house) but I truly believe what you choose to play in your car so you don't jerk the wheel off the side of a bridge is the music that has your heart.
I understand the gripes from old heads who hate the new sound in rap but like every style of music things evolve and change. There is no denying there is a TON of bad hip-hop at the moment that makes you want to shove an ice pick through your ear. But there's also a ton of great music too. Nas just dropped a new track with 50 Cent, Moneybagg Yo just dropped his best album to date, Drake has an album coming out in two weeks, and tonight we get a new project from Travis Scott called Utopia.
Now Travis has a distinct sound and if you aren't into it theres a good chance you hate pretty much all his music. But if you're like the rest of us and love yelling "IT'S LIT" over a melodic beats and distorted vocals then you're probably pretty fucking hyped.
It's been a long five years since he last dropped an album. Since then he had the tragedy of fans dying at his 2021 Astroworld Festival, had another baby with Kylie Jenner, then had another breakup with Kylie, and now is ready to rekindle his relationship with the fans of his music.
And in case you forgot, the last time Travis dropped an album it was scenes. He did not list any of the features so you can to comb through the entire album to hear who was actually on it.
This time around, however, we know at least a few of the features.
First, we know that Lost Forever featuring James Blake and Westside Gunn, a song that debuted a full two years ago at the Cactus Jack x Dior fashion show, is definitely on the album. It was confirmed by James Blake himself.
It also sounds like Drake will be featured on the album after the strip club in New York, Starlets, posted that Drake left a case at the club with the word "Utopia" scribbled across it.
Drake and 21 Savage's album "Her Loss" featured Travis on the song "P*ssy & Millions" which was easily one of the best tracks on the project.
But as we all know the music is only a small piece of the pie these days. Look at trash artists like Ice Spice who have careers that are seemingly completely fueled by TikTok and social media. Marketing matters.
Travis knows this and has always been a master at that end of things. This time around is no different. He had a failed concert planned for the Egyptian Pyramids, which idiots were selling their homes to try and get to…
He had mysterious totems set up in Texas and at Nike's headquarters…
He has new Fortnite skins dropping in conjunction with the album…
And he was very conspicuously seen last night at Drake's concert and after party…
But now it's put up or shut up time. All the marketing in the world can't help you if you drop some hot garbage. Sure the hype beasts will support no matter what but the people who just want to hear some good fun music won't stick around long if your project sounds anything like Lil Durk's last album.
He has some pretty lofty numbers to live up to from Astroworld as that album did 537k in the first week. But judging by how much trash hip-hop has been released over the past year I think he'll be welcomed with open arms.
