The First Trailer For Timothee Chalamet's 'Wonka' Is Here And It Doesn't Look Too Shabby

The story will focus specifically on a young Willy Wonka and how he met the Oompa-Loompas on one of his earliest adventures.

Like most rational people, I am a fan of 'Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory'. Not so much the 2005 'Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, which inexplicably holds a 83% critic score on rotten tomatoes but thats a gripe for another time. This movie comes with a little bit of hesitation and excitement for me. The hesitation comes from another attempt to get some juice out of a property that has a perfect adaptation in existence. The excitement comes from the talent of Timothee Chalamet and the fact that this movie is NOT a remake but rather a movie meant to stand alongside the 1971 classic.

All that said, this trailer was relatively pleasant! There are a ton of Paddington vibes which makes sense considering the director, a real whimsical look and a funny ass Oompa Loompa in Hugh Grant. I still have hesitations but this doesn't look too bad to me.

By the way, something that has been pointed out by a ton of people over the past few months is how much Jeremy Allen White looks like a young Gene Wilder which is something I cannot unsee. Love Chalamet but now I'm gonna wonder what could have been.

On the back end, this is directed by Paul King aka the mind behind both Paddington movies. They were both over-memed as the best movies ever or whatever but they were both objectively great movies that were incredibly charming. Is the incredibly abrasive character of Willy Wonka someone that oozes charm? Not exactly but the movies themselves do undeniably ooze a certain sense of wonder that exists in those bear movies.
