Amanda Nunes Retires After DOMINATING Irene Aldana At UFC 289

After dominating Irene Aldana for five straight rounds in a fight that was never in doubt, the greatest female mixed martial artist of all time has decided to call it a career.

Amanda Nunes has retired.

Honestly - the fight is barely worth talking about. Irene Aldana is a great fighter, but she just flat out didn't show up tonight. She landed one good punch in Round 1, and otherwise didn't do a single impressive thing all fight. I think Nunes landed as many significant strikes as Aldana threw. She ate her legs up with low kicks and obliques, ripped hooks to the body throughout, and pieced up her noggin real bad. Amanda basically turned it into a glorified sparring session where she got to do target practice for twenty-five minutes. She also landed takedown after takedown after takedown after takedown WITH EASE.

As far as the retirement goes - it's kind of a shame we won't get to see Nunes/Pena III, but after avenging that loss in the fashion she did, I don't think Nunes had anything left to prove. They tried to schedule the trilogy, Pena broke her rib, and Aldana was the next best thing. That ain't on Amanda. So these tweets from Pena just ain't it....

Obviously, Nunes could continue to fight (and pick up PPV points) and probably dominate the division for the foreseeable future, but she's been eyeing retirement for a while now, she's got another kid on the way with her wife Nina Nunes, and again - she has literally nothing left to prove.

She's unanimously considered the greatest of all time in women's MMA, she beat almost everyone there is to beat....

(Except Cat Zingano)

….and by retiring tonight, she becomes the only double champ in UFC history to go out on top, still holding both belts.

In a sport where almost NOBODY goes out on top, it's nice to see a happy ending every once in a while. Especially when it's for someone as deserving as Amanda Nunes.

P.S. I swear to god I meant to write "DUCKED" in this tweet….

Very unfortunate typo. I'm sorry to The Lioness. No disrespect. Meant to say ducked. I swear.
