John Sterling has been calling the Yankees for as long as time has been in existence. You will literally have to kill this man to get him out of the booth and even then he might still find his way to show up for the next game.

Well, Saturday night we almost experienced the end live on air as a foul ball came whizzing back behind home plate, destined straight for his skull. The ensuing audio is tremendous, especially now that we know he's doing just fine.

Head on a swivel John, head on a swivel! Foul ball blasts right off his 84 year old body and what happens next? He gives off a few audible "ows" for the fan's listening at home as he gathers himself and hops right back on the mic. It's the top of the 9th, with 2 outs against the Red Sox. You think a foul ball is taking him out?

The baseball struck Sterling in the left eyebrow. Aside from “a little bit of blood,” Sterling said he was fine.

“I’m not going on the IL,” he said.

At the time, Sterling was without his longtime analyst Suzyn Waldman, who left at the top of the inning to head downstairs for postgame interviews. (The Athletic)

The man has missed funerals, birthdays, graduations, you name it he's skipped it for this job. His wife divorced him because he was too dedicated to his craft. You think a foul ball is stopping him? Not a fucking chance. He's not part of this new soft generation. John is a pro's pro and will stop at nothing to call his beloved Yankees.

Glad he's doing okay and we didn't all listen to a live death on WFAN tonight.
