The Baseball Gods Have Heard Our Prayers As It's Announced There Is A Barry Bonds Documentary On The Way
Music to our (allegedly) steroid loving ears, a Barry Bonds documentary is reportedly in the works with no release date as of yet. Deadline put out an article saying that HBO and Words + Pictures are working on this project that should have every baseball fan pumped up.
For years he had us all rushing to the TV to see what he would do next, and chances are it was hit a homer over 450 feet. I remember exactly where I was when he broke the HR record vs the Nationals and I'm sure a lot of you remember as well. Barry Bonds was must see TV every time he stepped up to the plate. Now we get to see a behind the scenes look at it.
The untitled Bonds film is being directed by Keith McQuirter (By Whatever Means Necessary: The Times of Godfather of Harlem) and executive produced by Oscar winner Ezra Edelman (O.J.: Made in America) and Connor Schell and Libby Geist, creators of the Emmy-winning series 30 for 30 and EPs of the megahit docuseries The Last Dance.
“The untitled HBO Sports Documentary will tell the story of Barry Bonds, baseball’s single-season and all-time home run king, from his beginnings as the son of All-Star Bobby Bonds, and godson of the iconic Willie Mays, all the way up to his meteoric rise in the 1990s and 2000s,” notes a release about the project. “Using archival footage and original interviews, the film will chronicle Bonds’ emergence as one of the game’s most talented all-around players with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants and then his years as a superstar with the Giants when he rewrote the record book in his late 30s amid controversy.”
When you gave people who worked on "O.J.: Made In America" and "The Last Dance" on the same project with a subject such as Bonds, there is no way this thing won't be awesome. Those are 2 of the better sports documentaries of all time so this thing is going to have some big expectations. Barry won't be included in the documentary....yet. They said the opportunity to join the project is still available and I think it would be super interesting to see and hear his thoughts on his career and obviously everything after his career. You know he's never been one to shy away from his thoughts and I bet he has some people he'd love to open up about. I'm sure we will get a deep dive into how and why he isn't in the Hall Of Fame, teammates and friends thoughts on the matter, plus you know we're going to get some great shots of his tape measure bombs. Super excited to see how this project comes along on one of if not the most polarizing athlete in the last 30 years. A man who entertained for years and years every summer, the best we've ever seen, the guy who punished baseballs like no one ever has before. Long overdue for a look into the career of Mr. Bonds. Now enjoy the bombs.
