Is Caddyshack 2 The Worst Sequel Ever Made?
Brandon obviously feels the worst sequel ever is Caddyshack 2. I don't know if I can take quite that leap. It's a horrible movie with a Dan Aykroyd performance so bad, it's almost hard to to believe. This is literally the worst scene in this trainwreck of a movie so watch at your own risk:
Caddyshack 2 also manages to taint Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) who is one of the funniest characters in film history. Chase was also the only sucker to come back for the sequel. There is no question it's a dreadful movie...but is it the worst ever?
Rocky V
It's baffling how bad Rocky V is. It had the same director as the first Rocky (which won Best Picture!). Unlike Caddyshack 2, it even had the entire cast return. This is case where the basic idea of the movie is it's fatal flaw. No one wants to see Rocky Balboa lose everything. We love Rocky. Mix in a terrible antagonist in Tommy Gunn and you have one of the worst sports sequels ever. Caddyshack 2 is a worse movie but Rocky V feels like an even greater drop-off.
Superman IV: The Quest For Peace
It should be illegal that an actor as great as Gene Hackman ended up in a movie this bad. The film studio cut costs right before filming. Christopher Reeve, as great as he is as Superman, co-wrote this with the best intentions about getting rid of nuclear arms. Unfortunately having a character named Nuclear Man who is being led around by Jon Cryer isn't the best way to get that message across.
Batman and Robin
This was a slide you could see coming a mile away. Each Batman movie got progressively worse since the 1989 version with Jack Nicholson. Batman Returns was a good movie but once Tim Burton left the franchise, the soul left with him. Some people like Batman Forever but despite a great cast with Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman, the performances are so wooden or in the case of Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones, too corny.
Batman and Robin is the bottoming out. It's one of those movies that is so terrible, it's almost enjoyable. You can watch it in 2023 at home and get a good laugh as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Alicia Silverstone give insanely bad performances that are almost as bad as the script.
Godfather III
This is my pick for the worst sequel ever. It's not the worst movie on this list. That would be either Caddyshack II or Batman and Robin. But is is the biggest fall from grace. The Godfather is the greatest movie I've ever seen. The Godfather II is right up there for me as well. I look at these movies as the best that film has to offer. To have the third one star George Hamilton and Sofia Coppola and both act as badly as you'd expect is abhorrent.
The whole point of The Godfather is to watch a good man pulled to become evil by family, ambition and fate. Michael already was evil at the end of the second movie. There was no reason to make this movie except for a cash grab which Francis Ford Coppola needed at the time. I do my best to pretend it didn't exist when I do rewatches but this movie is a stain you can't wash away.
In this episode of DOUBLE PLAY, we do talk even more Caddyshack II as well as the funniest sports movie ever made: Caddyshack. You can watch the whole episode below or click HERE to listen:
