Figuring Out Which Quarterback The Packers Are Going To Draft Tonight

It's Draft day folks. One of the more fun and interesting days on the sports calendar has arrived. For the most part you can't lose on this day. Your team hopefully keeps their pick and drafts a young up and coming player who can give you a boost for years to come. Maybe they eventually become a bust, but you can at least convince yourself tonight that he's a winner. Just remember, there's a YouTube compilation video out there somewhere to make anyone look good before they debut in the league.

There are, however, a few ways to come away from tonight feeling sad. Let's go through some.

1) Your team takes too long to make their selection and proceeds to get skipped as the waiting team sprints to the podium to take their guy. This happened in '03 with the Vikings and 2011 with the Chiefs. Just can't happen under any circumstances. This is a fire everyone type of move that leaves countless families destroyed. Don't do this.

2 ) Your team trades away the pick just moments before Goodell is about to take the podium. While that should mean you're getting more picks in return, that's a short term feeling of disappointment in the moment. You watched the draft to see your franchise get someone and now you have nothing but more picks down the road.

3) Your team, who has an MVP, Super bowl champion QB inexplicably trades up to take a quarterback instead of any of the offensive skill position players available that were needed.

We'll focus on scenario three for the purpose of this blog. Even though he's now the quarterback of the franchise, it still was beyond idiotic for the Packers to trade up to the 26th overall pick and draft Jordan Love in the 2020 NFL Draft. He could go onto become a really good player no doubt, but wasting the chance to improve the offense even more during those championship windows will never make sense to me. It's finally time to see what he's got, which is exciting, but there was a better path to do all this.

That brings us to tonight's entertainment. The Packers are armed with the 13th overall pick of the night after shipping Aaron Rodgers to the Jets. While this class does seem fairly thin, there are talented skill position guys available to improve this young offense. You've got WRs in JSN, Jordan Addison, and Zay Flowers. There's also the two premier tight ends Dalton Kincaid and Michael Mayer. Hard to be upset about coming away with any of those five guys to help give your young QB a toy to use in 2023 and beyond.

That is however, unless history repeats itself, just like it did with Rodgers going to the Jets. You can see it in the stars, can't you? While Bryce Young is going first overall, the other three names expected to go tonight could land anywhere. There's smoke all over the damn place with Will Levis, Anthony Richardson, and CJ Stroud. If you don't think the lunatics in Mark Murphy and Brian Gutekunst won't tinker with the idea of taking a QB there and saying they "took the best available player on the board" you don't understand the lack of direction those guys operate with.

It's going to be Levis isn't it? Richardson feels like he has too much raw talent to slip that far. Stroud's Ohio State allure might persuade a team to snag him soon after. Levis has the Josh Allen cannon, but mostly stunk at Kentucky and doesn't have the best personality reviews. Teams could easily pass on him and create a free fall. Wouldn't put it past Gute to have Levis as his number one overall rated player and pull the trigger. All I ask is that you shoot me in the face if that happens.

While I'm mostly kidding about the QB stuff, we've seen it happen in the past when we least expected it. I'm ready for anything. Just draft JSN or Kincaid and give Jordan Love another weapon. Make it easy on the kid and surround him with talent. While there are defensive needs, what's most important is making Love comfortable out there from the jump. Do what you never did for Rodgers and draft an offensive skill position player in the first round, I beg of you.

Most likely they're trading back and accumulating more assets. Can't wait.
