The Day Off After Opening Day Is The Dumbest Thing In Sports
Man, there's nothing like the excitement of Opening Day. Flowers are blooming, birds are chirping and baseball is finally back. I can't wait to take a look at the board today and see the pitching match-ups for the second games of all the Opening Weekend series!
What's that? Ten of the 15 series have an off-day following the first game of the season? Well that makes complete sense. Thank you, Major League Baseball!
Now, MLB will tell you this off-day for most teams is to account for weather issues that could arise on Opening Day — which would beg the question why games are being played in places like New York, Boston, Washington and Chicago instead of in warm weather or domes, but I'm sure there's a great reason!
I suppose I understand the need for the built-in extra day, though, given that any potential issues with games on Thursday are coming with so little time left in the season to make up a game. There just isn't any flexibility over the next six months.
I'm surprised MLB is still televising games with how intent it seems on self-sabotage at seemingly every turn. Enjoy the off-day after one full day of baseball, everybody.
