After Six Awful Seasons And Becoming Completely Irrelevant, The Patrick Ewing Era At Georgetown Is Finally Over

Well there it is. After 6 painful, awful, just garbage seasons (outside of that one Big East Tournament), Georgetown fired Patrick Ewing. On one hand this shows exactly why you shouldn't take over your alma mater if you're a legend like Ewing. The guy is 1 of the 2 biggest names to play there. Now Georgetown fans are booing him and don't want to see him. I get it. He was awful. There's no other way to put it.

Also how poetic is it that Ewing's last game was in MSG while Boeheim was in Greensboro? Fitting. It was no secret that Georgetown fans wanted him out and let it be known publicly. Here's the thing though - Georgetown kind of fucked themselves in a way because of the contract extension they gave him. There was no reason to do it. They literally just rewarded him and now the buyout is more. Sure, boosters and all that helps. But you're still paying out money you don't have to.

Money that could and should go to a coach that can make this program relevant again. There's no reason for Georgetown to be irrelevant. In terms of names - Micah Shrewsberry (PSU), Mike Brey (Rico's texting best friend), Tommy Amaker (Harvard) are all going to be names you hear. I'd go hard after Shrewsberry. I think the dude can coach his ass off. Nothing against Brey or Amaker, but you get a guy from a power conference who is younger. Try to find someone that can stick there.

Then there's this man

I know it makes sense, but I don't see it happening. He wants to live in NYC. St. John's is likely going to fire Mike Anderson. That's the job.

But this is one of the most important hires in Georgetown history. Ewing, at least they won the press conference. You had the story of him back there to hide the suck for a little bit. You even had fun players like Akinjo and McClung. But with likely St. John's opening up too, you can't miss here. You can't keep being the bottom of the Big East. You're Georgetown! At least be a high seed who loses in an upset in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament like we're used to.
