The Philadelphia Eagles Tour Of Chaos And Destruction Marches On With QB Coach Brian Johnson Getting Promoted To Offensive Coordinator
Icon Sportswire. Getty Images.This move was pretty much a foregone conclusion the moment it was reported Shane Steichen got the Indy job a few hours before the Super Bowl. Everybody knew that Brian Johnson would be the guy, and it looks like the Eagles didn't even conduct any other interviews for the job. So why did it take a a few weeks after Steichen left for this to become official? Don't know, don't care.
All that matters now is that Brian Johnson ain't going anywhere, which means the Eagles offense is still going to violently pound every defense they go up against in 2023.
We've already seen the insane jump Jalen Hurts made last year from the previous season. It was the first time in his career since god knows when that he had the same offensive coordinator for 2 seasons in a row. He never had a chance to focus on developing as a quarterback before because every year he was learning a new offense and getting familiar with a new play caller. All the man needed was a little bit of continuity in his coaching staff to achieve greatness. And he's more familiar with Brian Johnson than anybody else in football.
Brian Johnson know the offense. He knows what works, he knows what doesn't work. He has experience with play calling. And most importantly, he allows Jalen to spend another offseason turning into an absolute machine instead of having to learn an entirely new offense. So if you thought we've seen peak Jalen Hurts already then I suggest you think again, cowboy.
It's not often that losing both of your coordinators in the same offseason can be seen as a good thing. Especially not right after your team played in a Super Bowl. But honestly, this seems like best case scenario for the Eagles. Because 1) I don't think they'd be able to get through another full season with Jonathan Gannon. So moving on from him in the offseason instead of halfway through next year is huge. And 2) if Shane Steichen doesn't take the Indy job, then there's a strong chance that Brian Johnson is the OC somewhere else right now.
All I'm saying is that it's going to be a terribly long Sunday to find yourself playing defense against the Philadelphia Eagles next season.
