In the heart of Siberia, Lake Baikal is one of the biggest lakes in the world. It contains 23% of the world’s fresh water and is nicknamed “the great sacred sea” by Russian people. Siberia is a wild place. And 23% of the Earth's freshwater is a staggering statistic. That's more than all of the North American Great Lakes combined.

It's also the world's deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 1,642 metres (5,387 feet; 898 fathoms), and the world's oldest lake at 25–30 million years old.

Its water is extremely pure, thanks to the “goupki”, a little animal that filters water. Lake Baikal is frozen half of the year, but nevertheless has a great biodiversity. 

There are countless myths and legends associated with the sprawling Lake Baikal. These include reports of a mythical monster that resides within its depths, and a hidden fortune in missing treasure. But by far the most intriguing of such tales, is an alleged encounter between the soviet army, and members of a mysterious underwater people. A race that has become known as the "Lake Baikal Swimmers."

Under the waters of Lake Baikal in 1982, 7 Russian divers are exploring the world deepest freshwater lake on a research mission, but 50 metres underwater, strange humanoid creatures appear and in an attempt to capture one of them, all the divers are pushed up to the top by an unknown force. Who were these creatures and what can we learn from this encounter?
