Tubi's Super Bowl Commercial Was Clever, But It Went Too Far
By now we've all seen the Tubi commercial from last night. I'm not really a break down the tape on the commercials guy, as during most breaks I was scrolling Twitter, refreshing the Barstool Sportsbook app, or running back for snacks. I also think the commercials have become such a spectacle or are becoming such a main storyline that I rather not even pay attention. To really get me to notice one you have to stand out. I also have to be in front of the tv at the time.
After doing this so many years, I've become good at timing breaks to just before they come back to the game when I sit down. The only two commercials that jumped out where The Bud Light commercial with Miles Teller because it may me think if we could ever get a film with him Matt Damon, Julia Stiles and Kate Hudson it would sweep the best actor, actress and supporting actor and actresses as well as winning best picture.
Someone go write the script for my people.
The other commercial that jumped out was Tubi.
It was without a doubt clever. Everyone in America knows that sound of smart tv's clicking, and they did it with a cut away of Burkhardt and Olsen to make it seem even more like it was realistic. Everyone got duped. Shit, I'm not too proud to admit I got duped. Families across the country were flipping out.
Listen, it was 1000% clever, and everyone will remember it, and having sat in marketing classes in college know that the goal of the whole thing is just that .. stand out. So Tubi gets two thumbs up for standing out and whoever thought of that commercial should get raises. But with all that said … it was unnecessary.
You don't mess with certain things and the Super Bowl viewing experience is one of those things. Don't fuck with the people. Don't screw up parties. Don't mess with happiness. Have a sense of the moment. Sometimes all people want is a nice Sunday watching a game with their family and friends. Use that commercial during the Grammys or the Shitbag Golden Globes which got shifted to a Tuesday night anyway. Don't do that during the Super Bowl. It was mean.
And worst of all now it opens the flood gates for companies in the next few years. What's next? Pretending the TV completely went off? Mimicking a Black Out? Having the announcers fake announce the game has been suspended? We don't need a one upping contest of who can fuck with people the most realistically. Don't need it. Just stick to highlighting your products in a positive manner and let us watch the game.
