The Best Movies Coming To Streaming This Month. "Edge of Tomorrow", "Bad Boys"

NETFLIX

1. LOTR Trilogy - Elite/100

I don't think I need to pitch you on the greatest trilogy of all time. These have lived on HBO Max for a while but this is great for those of you that don't have that.

2. Bad Boys - 83/100

Marcus Burnett is a hen-pecked family man. Mike Lowry is a foot-loose and fancy free ladies' man. Both are Miami policemen, and both have 72 hours to reclaim a consignment of drugs stolen from under their station's nose. To complicate matters, in order to get the assistance of the sole witness to a murder, they have to pretend to be each other.

I know this clip is from Bad Boys II but both are coming to Netflix. They are just awesome buddy cop movies with just about a billion quotes to pull from.

3. La La Land - 96/100

Mia, an aspiring actress, serves lattes to movie stars in between auditions and Sebastian, a jazz musician, scrapes by playing cocktail party gigs in dingy bars, but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

I have no idea if this will be good or ass but I am really interested by the concept. Apparantly, you can watch this series in any episode order you want and it still makes a coherent story. We'll see!

HBO MAX

1. Eighth Grade - 99/100

Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school — the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year — before she begins high school.

This movie is perfect encapsulation of the high school experience. Just awkward as all hell with some incredible kid actors. Also one of the great supporting actor performances of that year from Josh Hamilton

2. The Art of Self Defense - 84/100

Casey is attacked at random on the street and enlists in a local dojo led by a charismatic and mysterious Sensei in an effort to learn how to defend himself. What he uncovers is a sinister world of fraternity, violence and hypermasculinity and a woman fighting for her place in it.

This is a very under-appreciated movie from a couple years ago that has a hilarious, dark comedy feel. It definitly wont be everybody's cup of tea but I think a lot of you would enjoy it.

3. Edge of Tomorrow - 91/100

Major Bill Cage is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and dropped into combat. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an alpha alien down with him. He awakens back at the beginning of the same day and is forced to fight and die again… and again - as physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop.

I am so god damn psyched up about this. This is one of my favorite sci fi action movies and it is NEVER on streaming. If you are a fan of the other Tom Cruise-Christopher McQuarrie collabs like Top Gun: Maverick, Mission: Impossible Fallout & Rogue Nation, Jack Reacher and Valkyrie, you should check this out.

Feb 1st: Birdman, Bull Durham, Can't Hardly Wait, Casino Royale, Catch Me If You Can, Dr. No, Eighth Grade, Footloose, FOrce Majeure, Goldeneye, Platoon, Quantum of Solace, Scary Movie 1-3, Sleepy Hollow, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Superbad, Swiss Army Man, Taxi Driver, The Art of Self Defense, The Men Who Stare At Goats, The Silence of the Lambs, The Terminator, Tommy Boy, War of the Worlds

1. Happy Gilmore - 80/100

Failed hockey player-turned-golf whiz Happy Gilmore -- whose unconventional approach and antics on the grass courts the ire of rival Shooter McGavin -- is determined to win a PGA tournament so he can save his granny's house with the prize money. Meanwhile, an attractive tour publicist tries to soften Happy's image.

Sometimes you just need a movie to throw on and give you that warm, nostalgic, fuzzy feeling. Honestly, anything from the Happy Madison catalogue from this era is gold for that.

2. Superbad - 99/100

Two co-dependent high school seniors are forced to deal with separation anxiety after their plan to stage a booze-soaked party goes awry.

This blooper reel always gets me. It's one of the greatest comedies of the last 20 years and is always fun to watch.

3. Thank You For Smoking - 86/100

Nick Naylor is a charismatic spin-doctor for Big Tobacco who'll fight to protect America's right to smoke -- even if it kills him -- while still remaining a role model for his 12-year old son. When he incurs the wrath of a senator bent on snuffing out cigarettes, Nick's powers of "filtering the truth" will be put to the test.

Chris Castellani and I were just talking about how good this movie was and I was pumped to see it's hitting streaming.

Feb 1st: 2012, 50/50, Are We There Yet, The Green Mile, Happy Gilmore, The Help, I Robot, If Beale Street Could Talk, Scarface, Something's Got To Give, Superbad, Thank You For Smoking, The Watch, Water for Elephants, Waterboy

1. Four Brothers - 74/100

Four adopted brothers return to their Detroit hometown when their mother is murdered and vow to exact revenge on the killers.

This is one of my all-time favorite FX bangers. Just a solid movie that doesn't do anything particularly well other than entertaining the dumb part of my brain. RIP Jack.

2. Invasion of the Body Snatchers - 85/100

Matthew Bennell notices that several of his friends are complaining that their close relatives are in some way different. When questioned later they themselves seem changed, as they deny everything or make lame excuses. As the invaders increase in number they become more open and Bennell, who has by now witnessed an attempted 'replacement', realises that he and his friends must escape or suffer the same fate.

One of the OG great sci-fi horror movies, I'd say it's one of my favorite of the 70s.

3. A Simple Favor - 80/100

Stephanie, a dedicated mother and popular vlogger, befriends Emily, a mysterious upper-class woman whose son Nicky attends the same school as Miles, Stephanie's son. When Emily asks her to pick Nicky up from school and then disappears, Stephanie undertakes an investigation that will dive deep into Emily's cloudy past.

A sleek, sexy murder mystery that is great to watch with your significant other if you're looking for a movie to compromise on.
