Weird Ass Year In College Hoops Rolls On: Florida Atlantic Is Ranked For The First Time Ever, Team Takes A Victory Lap On Twitter
Have a day, Florida Atlantic. I know I hate the AP Top-25, but this is the one (and only) good thing about having that old ass ranking system. A team like FAU gets ranked for the first time and it means the world to them. Look at the victory lap they took and rightfully so:
Again, this is all fair game. This is what Florida Atlantic should be doing. I know everyone says oh you're ranked 24, big deal, something along those lines. But it's Florida Atlantic. Good luck naming one former (hell, even current) Florida Atlantic player. Not like they have this huge history of success or anything like that. They've made the NCAA Tournament exactly one time. 2002.
So how the hell did we get here?
It starts with head coach Dusty May. They play an incredibly fun style of basketball that's somewhat analytically based. They shoot a ton of threes, take away the 3pt line defensively. They dare you to play 1-on-1 ball and take open, bad shots. Then they have this balanced scoring. Nobody scores more than 13 per game. Five guys score from 9.4-12.9 points per game. You can't just gameplan to take away like Michael Forrest or Johnell Davis.
Not to mention they are already a step ahead. They swept North Texas (top-70 team). They have a win over UAB already. They have a win at Florida. They went to WKU and won yesterday. Their one loss is at Ole Miss - respectable even if Ole Miss is struggling now. But, the fact is they set themselves up to not only win the C-USA (damn good league) regular season title. They should be in consideration for an at-large team, if they don't get the auto bid. They are 35 on KenPom. They are 12 in the NCAA Net Rankings.
And they go to school in Boca Raton. Seems like a nice little life. Oh and meanwhile College of Charleston is No. 18 in the country in the rankings. What a weird ass year.
