HISTORY: Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes First Player Ever To Score A Goal In 5 Different World Cups
Overcoming a first-half goal that was disallowed for reasons unclear upon quick initial viewing, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo got a golden opportunity to get that back and took full advantage. Ronaldo's penalty kick at 65' opened the floodgates for a wild second half in his side's World Cup opener against Ghana, which resulted in a 3-2 Portugal victory.
The legendary 37-year-old forward has now had a goal in five separate World Cups dating back to his debut in 2006. Since that year when Portugal finished fourth overall, it's been a bit of a rough go of it for Ronaldo and the Navigators at the grand international tournament. They made the Round of 16 in 2010 and 2018 and failed to get out of the group stage in between.
Currently sitting at ninth in the FIFA rankings, Portugal are off to a fine start and should have little issue advancing to the knockout phase after notching three points in a tighter than expected match. Already the 2022 World Cup has seen some crazy upsets, but Ronaldo was instrumental in making sure that didn't happen in this fixture.
