The Red Hot Chili Peppers Just Messed Around And Dropped Their 2nd Album This Year

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of my favorite bands ever. I'm 36 years old. I do not listen to any real new music. I have no idea who anybody at the MTV Video Music Awards are. The bands I like don't put out much new stuff, so I was really excited when the Chili Peppers dropped an album earlier this year on April 1st. They've had 11 full albums before 2022 and now two weeks shy of lead singer Antony Keidis' 60th birthday they dropped #13, their second in the last seven months.

Prior to Unlimited Love, their April release, they hadn't put out an album since 2016, so this is just a delightful surprise. I was going to blog this on Thursday, but I wanted to give the album a full listen a couple times before putting metaphorical pen to paper. Here are my top five favorite songs on the new record, titled "Return of the Dream Canteen"

1) Carry Me Home - This is just a classic RHCP ballad. Big energy, big hook, and you'll be shouting the words at their next concert. The intro to the song is also very different and has a cool vibe.

2) La La La La La La La La - I love the lyrics to start this show and the subdued nature of the piano in the background. Gets you in a different sound than you're used to with the Chili Peppers but it gets back to normal pretty quick. Awesome vocals on the hook. Great song all around.

3) Afterlife - This is just textbook RHCP with the Flea bass and Keidis' playful vocals. And for that reason, I love it.

4) Eddie - Great background vocals. Cool callback to "it's only 1983" which is a nod to when the band was formed. I actually saw this released as a single a few weeks ago and sent it to Eddie and he called it "A W for Ed Heads everywhere"

5) My Cigarette - This is catchy as heck and makes me want a smoke. The rhyming is awesome off of the hook and I am very down with the beat.

Just missed it: Bella. This song rules and has a top 3 hook on the album.

Special callout: In The Snow appears to have some of "Where's My Mind" beat in the background and I fucking dig it.

If I'm being honest, I did like Unlimited Love a bit more, but this is still a very good album. The fact that these guys are still putting out this type of quality in their 40th year together is mind boggling.
