Workers of the World Unite Behind Kate Beckinsale's Labor Day Post

Since the days on antiquity, our greatest minds have understood the value of labor. That the satisfaction of a good, honest day's work is an essential part of human nature. That striving, effort and accomplishment are necessary for us to be truly happy.

Sophocles once said, "Without labor, nothing prospers."

As my favorite historical figure Teddy Roosevelt, who spoke so often and eloquently on the subject of what was once called "the manly virtues" put it, "It is only through labor and painful effort, by grim energy and resolute courage, that we move on to better things."

In Martin Luther King Jr.'s words, "All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence."

So true. So very, very true. And so it is that in 1894, the United States government joined a growing movement of states and declared Labor Day to be an official holiday. But of all the words of all the great thinkers, and a century and a quarter spent recognizing the dignity of work, no one has expressed it as beautifully as Kate Beckinsale did today.

This, my fellow working brothers and sisters, is what true respect of the value of hard work looks like. You can have your Karl Marx, with his commie gobbledygook about the lumpen proletariat and who owns the means of production. The only class I care to belong to is one that includes Beckinsale. This is what Labor Day is all about. This is what 49 years old should look like. And this is how we should all wish to say goodbye to summer and embrace the unofficial start of fall.

So please allow me to join Kate in her thoughts on this day. Whether you're blue collar or white collar, small business or large, working for yourself or somebody else, using your hands or a laptop, producing goods or services, working outside your home or raising a family, I hope a hearty "Happy Labor Day" from Beckinsale and me will make you realize how appreciated you are. Enjoy your day off with these posts. You deserve it.
