The 2022 Field Of Dreams Game Was A Dud And A Half

Snoozefest, an absolute snoozefest. That is what MLB gave us in the second installment of the "Field Of Dreams" game. Last year we got arguably the game of the year with the White Sox taking down the Yankees with a dramatic Tim Anderson walk-off homer off Zack Britton. It was electric.

Homers into the corn for the win, what is better than that?

Then MLB turned around and a few months ago announced the Cubs and Reds would be playing in the game in 2022. Talk about a slap in the face. We knew these teams weren't going to be good this season, why throw this matchup at us? The Reds had arguably the worst 2 months in baseball while the Cubs stink on ice.

The game itself was just boring too. Cubs scored 3 in the first, 1 in the 4th and then it was quiet again until Cincinnati scored 2 in the 7th and that was all she wrote. No home runs, no real big names, no sick plays, just a regular Cubs - Reds game that ended 4-2. These teams are a combined 42 games under .500, no one wanted to watch this. No one even knew it was on! People were dialed into pre-season football, other big games were going on, more awful planning by MLB.

There were some cool moments, Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr. coming out of the corn to play catch, the always entertaining Joey Votto telling us what it meant for him to play on that field after losing his dad almost 14 years ago, a nice tribute to Ray Liotta who started in the movie. It wasn't all negative. It was just a snoozefest all around.

And that is on the heels of the news that there probably won't be a 2023 game in Iowa because of construction. So what are they going to do, a Sandlot game with the Dodgers and Giants? A Hey Arnold alley game with the Mets and Yankees? They had all the momentum of last years game and it got sucked away by a terrible matchup and no game in 2023. And maybe the weirdest part of the whole night.....

We got a Harry Caray hologram! Why? Why are we still doing holograms in 2022? It's bad, it's creepy, just play the audio and let it ride. Play a video of him on a screen and call it a night. Holograms don't impress anyone anymore, it isn't 2008. No clue what was going through their minds when this idea was pitched, I don't think anyone asked for it.

I'm sure it's an awesome event to go to if your team is playing. It's probably a bucket list type event if that is the case. But if it's just a boring game like this, it's a dud.

MLB has to clean it up. They should bring this game back in 2024 and give us some teams people actually want to watch and who can give us a good game. Not a 4-2 game that actually made me want to turn on pre-season football.

At least Carl had fun.
