Rivalry Don't Sleep: Atletico Madrid's Fans Ripped Down Thibaut Courtois’ Plaque From Their Walk Of Fame After The Team President Dared Them
Uhh yeah they did. They were basically dared to do so by the team President and that's how you know rivalry doesn't sleep. Atletico and Real hate each other. So when Thibaut Courtois helped Real Madrid win the Champions League, their hands were tied. They had to rip down his plaque from Atletico's walk of fame. Who cares if he stopped playing at Atletico in 2014? That's not the point. It doesn't even matter if he played 111 matches for Atletico, less than he played in for Chelsea and Real Madrid. They were told to get an axe and shovel do it themselves so they did just that.
It's an A+ move. It sets the tone that he's hated for going to a rival. It's the way it's supposed to be. Fans aren't supposed to be rational, especially soccer fans. Honestly, if Mike Mussina had a plaque in Camden Yards I'd want that torn down too. Might go do it myself if I had to. You don't just leave for the Yankees and get away with it. Ruined part of my childhood when he decided to put on pinstripes. This is basically multiplied by 1,000 in Spain.
So consider this a warning for anyone who even thinks of asking Atletico fans to do something. They will. They have no qualms ripping down plaques at their own Walk of Fame. They will do whatever it takes to make sure the world knows how much they love Atletico Madrid. It's an A+ move.
