Manchester City Wins the Premier League Title With One of the Most Insane Comebacks You'll Ever See
Manchester City entered Championship Sunday with a one-point lead over Liverpool for the Premier League title and a comfortable lead on goal differential. City needed only to match a Liverpool win, with a draw or loss from the Reds handing the title to City regardless of the result at the Etihad Stadium.
What happened over the two hours both teams were on the pitch was something Hollywood writers couldn't have come up with.
Wolverhampton struck first at Anfield with a goal in the third minute. It seemed like City was destined to take the title. That's when all hell broke loose.
Liverpool equalized in the first half, putting the pressure back on Man City. And just after Sadio Mané leveled the game at Anfield, Matty Cash gave Aston Villa the lead over City.
And if that couldn't make things tense enough in Manchester, Villa added another in the second half with just over 20 minutes to go. City's title hopes seemingly rested on the shoulders of Wolves getting a draw at Liverpool, barring a truly insane comeback.
Well, 10 years after Sergio Aguero's improbable 93:20 goal, Man City added another Championship Sunday comeback for the ages. Ilkay Gündogan and Rodri netted three goals in 5:36 to give City a 3-2 lead that the Sky Blues would keep to secure their fourth Premier League title in five seasons. You couldn't have come up with something crazier if you tried.
I still can't believe it happened. Liverpool ended up getting two more late goals to beat Wolves 3-1, so City would have been overtaken for the title were it not for their three goals in the second half.
