Killer Whales Have Joined The Great White Shark Party On Cape Cod

Boston Globe - It was hazy out on the water Sunday afternoon when Captain Jerry Leeman walked to the back of his boat, the Teresa Marie IV, and saw the large fin slicing through the ocean’s surface.

At first, the low visibility made him think it was probably a shark. But then the animal’s dorsal fin kept getting larger.

“It just kept coming out of the water, and when it breached it had a 6-foot dorsal on him,” said Leeman, who was with his five-person crew chasing haddock. “I thought, ‘That’s not a goddamn shark now, is it?’”

Leeman was one of two fishermen in the waters off Cape Cod on Sunday afternoon who took video and photographs of a large orca — better known as a killer whale — swimming nearby. The sightings were roughly a half-hour apart, and given the relative proximity of the boats it was likely the same animal.

20-foot Orca, with lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes... putting on a show for the fishermen out by Nantucket on Sunday.

The great whites moved into town a while ago now, so it shouldn't really come as a surprise that the real apex predator of the seas, the Orca, has shown up on the scene now.

Orcas are one of the only creatures on the planet that hunt (and take amusement doing it) sharks.

Yah, your boy Willy from that Disney movie? He woulda been chum for one of these bad boys in real life.

Just another reason I'm a recovering ocean guy and am fully on Team Lake now. Sure you aren't as buoyant in freshwater, and if you fall off ski without a life vest you can sink like a rock, but at least you don't have to worry about sharks, man of war, jellyfish, barracudas, stingrays, lionfish, sea urchins, and more.

p.s. - throwback to the time WSD and I surfed the Chicago River and all we had to worry about was carcinogenic water and floating condoms.

p.p.s. - can we get the family from Fall River to chime in on these events please? (OG Stoolies know this video well)
