Pedro Scooby Surfs Massive Wave At Nazaré And Somehow The Post-Wave Interview Was Even Better

Pretty much anybody who has been living and breathing over the past few years knows that Nazaré is THE place for big wave surfing. We're talking 80, 90, 100 ft waves getting pumped off the coast of Portugal.

So this past week the World Surf League held the TUDOR Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge with some of the best big wave surfers on the planet looking to bomb these mountainous waves. And somehow Brazilian surfer Pedro Scooby found himself in a situation that looked like this, and still managed to pull out of the barrel and finish off his ride.

If someone just showed you this screenshot without any context and told you there was a surfer somewhere in that photo, you'd probably just assume he was dead at that point. That wave is a not-so-subtle reminder of just how vicious Mother Nature can be. That there are forces on this world which are not meant for mere mortals to conquer. But Pedro Scooby comes out on the other side and finishes out that ride as clean as could be.

And as great as that wave was, somehow the interview afterwards was even better.

It had everything. Some perfectly placed F-bombs. The theatrics. A nice peek behind the curtain of what goes through the brains of these maniacs while they're out there. And most importantly, a great look into the relationship of a big wave surfer and his driver. Because everytime these guys get out there to surf a wave like Nazaré, it's life or death. Any wave could potentially be their last. But the reason why guys are able to escape death more often than not is because of their drivers who are out there to rescue them as soon as shit hits the fan. And sometimes even the jetski drivers need drivers themselves to help them out of dicey situations.

But it all comes down to the relationship between the surfer and driver. Both guys have to trust the shit out of each other. But guys have to be willing to put their own life on the line for the other. So the wave was great, the interview was hilarious, and the relationship between Pedro Scooby and his driver Nic Von Rupp is perfect. I'd score that whole thing a 10.0.
