Navy Ran a Fake Punt Where Even the Guy Who Got the Ball Said He Had No Idea It Was Being Snapped to Him

In the fourth quarter of Navy’s 17-13 win over Army, the Midshipmen ran a fake punt on 4th and 1 from their own 34-yard line. Linebacker Diego Fagot got the snap and snuck just far enough beyond the line to gain to give Navy the first down on a drive it would end in a field goal to put the Midshipmen up four points.

Here’s the thing, though: even Fagot had no idea the ball was coming to him. That’s right, the snapper just went rogue in minus territory in the Army-Navy Game. You absolutely have to respect the stones that move takes. He just decided they were going for it and figured everyone else would catch on when he didn’t snap it to the punter. Just because coach doesn’t call a fake doesn’t mean you can’t run one.

All’s well that ends well, though. Navy beat the Black Knights for just the second time since 2015 due in no small part to that critical drive which forced Army to need a touchdown the rest of the way.

Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. Props to Fagot for being able to capitalize on the impromptu fake punt.
