The First Trailer For The Showtime Lakers Series Kicks Ass

A Sports drama series based on the book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s by Jeff Pearlman.

The cast includes John C. Reilly as Jerry Buss, Jason Clarke as Jerry West, Sally Field as Jessie Buss, Hadley Robinson as Jeanie Buss, Adrien Brody as Pat Riley, Jason Segal as Paul Westhead, and Quincy Isaiah as Magic Johnson, Dr. Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, DeVaughn Nixon as Norm Nixon, Gabby Hoffman as Claire Rothman, Tamera Tomakili as Earlitha “Cookie” Kelly, and Rob Morgan as Ervin Johnson Sr.

This trailer gave us basically a stylistic look at what this movie is all about. Sex, drugs, basketball, and everything that binds the three. For those of you that think don't know the showrunner of this, Adam McKay, you actually do. He is the genius behind comedies you loved like 'Step Brothers', 'Anchorman', and 'The Other Guys'. He ALSO made the incredibly good movie about the housing crisis 'The Big Short'. In addition to all that, he also plays Dirty Mike of Dirty Mike and the Boys. He is the perfect brain for this project and this trailer has me hyped up to see what else he has in store for us.

The showtime lakers were one of the most exciting teams in the history of professional sports, the cast is huge & talented and the whole thing is headed by a comedic storytelling genius. What's not to like?

Here is my prediction of Magic Johnson's future review:

Some depressing production notes: McKay was a long time partner of Will Ferrell, who wanted to play the lead role of Jerry Buss. Going with John C. Reilly was actually the nail in the coffin of their partnership, which is kind of sad. They also were supposed to have Bo Burnham as Larry Bird, but he has some scheduling conflicts so he had to drop out.
