A Bunch Of Kids At Dave Chappelle's Former High School Are Threatening To Walk Out Because He's Trying To Raise Money For Them

Source - Dave Chappelle’s Washington, DC, high school is delaying a fundraiser event that the funnyman was supposed to attend after students threatened to walkout over the controversial special that mocked transgender people.

Duke Ellington School of the Arts initially said they would cancel the Nov. 23 fundraiser due to the student backlash, Politico reported, but after media scrutiny, the school said they would instead delay the event until April 22.

The fundraiser was meant to raise money for a new theater that would be named after the comedian.

“We recognize that not everyone will accept or welcome a particular artist’s point of view, product or craft, but reject the notion that a ‘cancel culture’ is a healthy or constructive means to teach our students how society should balance creative freedom with protecting the right and dignity of all of its members,” the school said in a statement to Politico.

The school acknowledged that Chappelle has helped raise millions of dollars for the school, and said it plans to use the controversy as a “teachable moment,” the report said.

My initial reaction to this article was outrage. Outrage and confusion because I genuinely couldn't understand how a group of people who have benefited so much from having a famous alumnus could turn on that person despite everything he's done for them. But then I remembered that we are dealing with literal children. High school students. Kids who's brains aren't developed enough to grasp the concept of Dave Chappelle's comedy. Or at the very least digest what he said after the fact and let that inform their opinion. More than likely the students threatening to walk out are those who read any of the thousand headlines calling for Dave Chappelle's head and made up their mind. It's sad but true- that's how people operate in 2021. What's even sadder is that fact that now the burden of buying supplies will most likely fall back on their underpaid teachers. Oh well. Anything to take a stand! 

I've said it before and I'll say it again, you don't have to think what Dave Chappelle said was funny, but you have to allow him the opportunity to say it. That's what comedians do- they make jokes. Some hit, some don't. Now here's a slightly less controversial stand up set from Dave. Enjoy...
