Angel Hernandez Had One of the Worst Games Ever by an Umpire Last Night, Missing TWENTY-SEVEN Taken Pitches

The Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox had the misfortune of Angel Hernandez being the home plate umpire for their game on Tuesday, which you know going into it will be a rough night. But even by his own standard, Hernandez was especially awful last night.

Over the course of nine innings, Hernandez missed between 24 and 27 taken pitches — depending on which umpire grading system you prefer — for an overall correct call percentage of 87 percent and an equally abysmal 89 percent consistency. You can see on the umpire report card how far those numbers are from the MLB average. The pitch to Robbie Grossman in the video is literally inside the chalk of the other batter's box.

I just want to know how long we're going to put up with this guy. He's objectively the worst person at his job in the entirety of the top level of his profession. He's sued his own employer. Everyone hates him. I guess the folks over at the MLB Umpires Union are doing a hell of a job.

All you can do this time of year is grin and bear it through the end of the regular season and then pray to whatever higher power you believe in that Hernandez is not assigned to your team's Postseason series.
