I Convinced Collin Morikawa To Wear A Suit To The Northern Trust Today
About 7 weeks ago I got the opportunity to interview Collin Morikawa. It was my first ever one on one interview and, as expected, I was highly nervous.
We already knew this but Collin is the absolute man. He couldn't have have possibly made the conversation more comfortable. Right off the jump he made me feel like I was just talking to one of my buddies who happens to be one of the greatest golfers on the planet. One of the things we talked about was Collin's image and how he was starting to craft it as he grows on TOUR. I had heard on a podcast prior to the interview that Collin thought other sports were able to show their personalities a bit more especially with what they wear, and it really struck a chord with me. I told Collin I thought he should make a huge splash and start wearing suits from the car to the clubhouse.
I thought in real time that this was a great conversation and that was when I didn't think he'd ever actually do it. Of course in typical me fashion I nervously kept speaking and expanding when I didn't need to and brought in black tie tuxedos into the mix but that's not the point here. The point is that 7 weeks ago, I had a conversation with the 3rd ranked golfer in the world, the Champion Golfer of the Year, and we picked Liberty National as the tournament to embark on this new journey... and he freakin did it. When I saw him coming off the ferry with that suit on my jaw hit the ground.
A credible source told me that if he had played a little better (and made the cut) that we were going to see a few more show stoppers over the weekend which just goes to show this idea is here to stay. It's crazy that no golfer has ever done this before. It is CRAZY that they just wear their golf outfit from the car to the first tee meanwhile every other athlete in every other sport gets their chance to show off their personality and their taste pre and post game. This is unbelievable branding for Morikawa. He can be the guy who wears suits. When Tiger Woods wore the backwards hat and sun glasses like a maniac at the PGA Championship in '19 the internet lit on fire. We couldn't believe a golfer looked different than they usually do and we freakin loved it. This is going to turn into a thing in golf, with Morikawa leading the way, you heard it here first.
