T-Pain Was Depressed For Four Years After Usher Told Him He "Wrecked The Music Industry" With Autotune

T-Pain said he dealt with four years of depression after Usher told him that his use of Auto-Tune had 'f***ed up music.'

The I'm 'n Luv (Wit a Stripper) artist, 35, speaking on the Netflix show This Is Pop, opened up about the emotional reaction to his peer's criticism, according to EW.

'Usher was my friend,' the I'm Sprung rapper said. 'I really respect Usher. And he said, "I'm gonna tell you something, man. You kinda f***ed up music.'''

'And then he was like, ''Yeah man you really f***ed up music for real singers,''' he said. 'I was like, ''What did I do? I came out and I used Auto-Tune.''

'He was like, ''Yeah, you f***ed it up.'' I'm like, ''But I used it, I didn't tell everybody else to start using it.'''

I completely understand T-Pain here. Usher, arguably one of the most talented and influential people in music, telling you you've RUINED the landscape of music? Sure, autotune changed a lot. Tons of people are famous rich "artists" now who just use autotune. A lot of them couldn't perform without it. No real "musical" talent. But, who's to say the talent is ONLY in the singing? T-Pain is a performer. He gets the crowd going. He's a nice guy, and he puts out bangers. I don't care if they're basically being sung by robots. Why can't autotune artists and more "natural" artists coexist? I guess that raises the argument about awards. Who deserves them more? Hmm. I get Usher's point too, I guess. But, why is he putting that all on T-Pain?? Is it his fault for using the tools at his disposal?? Sorry he's a popular guy, Usher. Sorry you had to do two albums in a row describing in detail all of your most personal infidelities and relationship issues, and T-Pain only had to tell us about a hot stripper, and a hot bartender.

Don't get me wrong, I love Usher. LOVE him. I used to play his CDs in my walkman on repeat, and lest we forget he basically found Justin Bieber. But that doesn't mean T-Pain doesn't have talent, or ruined the music industry. I'd argue he opened it up for more people to showcase their different KINDS of talents. There's room for everyone at the top, Usher.
