Two days after losing his father, Mississippi HS pitcher carries team, community on his back
Get ready for some feels on a Saturday.
Gehrig Conard is a star left-handed pitcher for the Stone Tomcats way down deep in Mississippi. Stone, one county off the coast, is most known for producing Christopher Boykin, also known as Big of Rob & Big, but it also produced this incredible video from last night.
Earlier this week, Kevin Conard - Gehrig's father and Stone's head baseball coach and athletic director - unexpectedly passed away. With the Tomcats in the midst of a deep Class 5A playoff run, Gehrig took the mound Friday night and battled his emotions. He also put the team on his back, going 3-for-4 at the plate and pitching a 2-hit shutout to carry his team to the victory only days after losing his father.
The video captures the scene, as Gehrig gets emotional in the top of the seventh inning of his shutout win, and with two strikes on the final hitter of the game, he takes a minute to compose himself. His teammates all rush to support him and he steps back on the mound to deliver a 91-MPH fastball to end his gem.
Prior to the game, Conard received support and encouragement from all over South Mississippi, including a pregame text from Southern Miss legend Brett Favre.
No jokes here. Sometimes sports can be beautiful.
