There Is A New Superman Movie In the Works From Warner Brothers
Deadline has confirmed that author Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing a Superman reboot feature for Warner Bros and DC, which J.J. Abrams is producing under his Bad Robot label.
Hannah Minghella will serve as producer. No plot yet and no attachments despite the fact that we’ve heard how Henry Cavill is eager to get back into the cape.
Coates is attached to a Ryan Coogler directed drama feature entitled Wrong Answer about a math teacher in Atlanta who is scandalized when he looks to get funding for his school by altering his students’ test scores. Michael Jordan is attached to Wrong Answer
Superman is THE superhero. THE SUPERHERO. Despite him and Batman being the OGs, the DCEU hasn't found a way to bring them into the fold in the proper way. I'm a fan of 'Man of Steel', but I will admit that there was some wasted potential for the character. I don't know if Ta-Nehisi Coates is the guy to make Superman the right way, but I will say that I really like this choice for one main reason: It's different.
The DCU has played it relatively safe and basically given us garden variety slop to munch on. Coates is such a different choice as a director because his experience isn't really in these sort of productions. He is an author and journalist who worked for a ton of different newspapers, wrote a bunch of books AND written both a Black Panther and Captain America comic series. Just going off of his wiki, he seems like a guy who is much smarter than your average director while also having some nerd roots (It mentions he was a big comic book and Dungeons and Dragons guy growing up).
I don't think that coming from the world of academia makes him a fantastic choice as a director. In fact, that would usually mean the opposite in my mind. But having someone smart enough to give us a movie a little more brains than the usual slop is a big plus. Having a passion for comic books and previous work writing them is also a great sign in my mind. Like the article mentions, Coates is also writing with Ryan Coogler. If a guy like Coogler trusts Coates, that is an incredibly good sign.
A question already floating around is if Cavill will be invited to return, especially since he has been very vocal about his desire to do so. Some of the speculation is that WB might be exploring Black Superman, which was pitched to WB by Michael B. Jordan before. Time will tell, but I think we can all agree that we just want to see good Superman conent. IT'S SUPERMAN!
