Rory McIlroy Doesn't Think Patrick Reed Runs His Twitter Account But Maybe "Someone From The Reed Family"

So the Patrick Reed/Rory McIlroy rules controversy has picked up steam again over the last couple days because Rory told the media at the WMPO that the Tour got an email on Monday saying a volunteer had come forward and said they stepped on Rory's ball on 18 and that's why his ball was embedded:

The Tour got an email on Monday that it had been stepped on and the volunteer said something like, ‘I’m so sorry that Rory is being dragged into this scenario, but I didn’t tell him that I actually stood on his ball to find it.'”

Which means the two situations at the Farmers last weekend weren't as similar as they first appeared. I will say, Frankie brought up a great point on the podcast when he said this volunteer might just be a fall guy for Squeaky Clean Rory because this now clears up the thought that Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy are similar in any way, shape or form. I love a good conspiracy theory and the conspiracy theory that the Tour made a volunteer say they stepped on Rory's ball is a great golf conspiracy theory.

Anyway. In that same media session Rory was asked abut the batshit crazy tweets from Patrick Reed's official Twitter account (and then the same tweets which were sent from @usegolfFACTS).

Here's what Rory had to say about that:

“Not sure that was Patrick,” he said of the all-caps callout tweet. “Could have been someone from the Reed family, but I don’t think it was Patrick.”

That, is an amazing answer. The subtext of that answer is, "I know Patrick Reed isn't behind his own Twitter account. You all know that Patrick Reed isn't behind his own Twitter account. It's Justine Reed. Always has been and always will be. So no, I'm not mad at Patrick for those tweets because they didn't come from him. They came from Cersei Lannister." Rory obviously would never actually say that but he kinda did say it with that answer. And to that I will say this again: The Reed Family is amazing for golf. AMAZING. If you watch sports for entertainment (I'm not here to tell you what to do but you should be watching sports for entertainment) then you should think they're amazing too. You don't have to like them, but you should appreciate them. The fact that one of the the most, if not the most, respected golfer in the game from an integrity standpoint has been pulled into the muck that surrounds the Reed Family is incredible.

We talk about all that on today's podcast along with Rory's response to the distance report, Riggs reports live from the WMPO pro am, the release of Butters Bay and then there's an interview with George Gankas. All around great show.
