THE FUTURE IS HERE (Pretty Much): GM Unveiled A Self-Driving Flying Cadillac And I Won't Lie, It's Terrifying
[Post] - The single-passenger Cadillac — technically, a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone — will be able to travel from urban rooftop to urban rooftop at speeds up to 55 miles per hour.
It is fully autonomous and all-electric, with a 90kW motor, a GM Ultium battery pack and an ultra-lightweight body with four pairs of rotors.
The autonomous Cadillac shuttle, described in the video as “arriving soon,” features a boxy silhouette that recalls the Cruise Origin, also designed by Simcoe’s team. It features fore and aft sliding doors and a panoramic glass roof.
The cabin has wraparound lounge-like seating, plus biometric sensors, voice control and hand gesture recognition.
I know it's 2021 and we've been talking about flying cars since like the 60s, but I'm still terrified. Maybe I'm just an old man now, but I don't want this sort of change. I don't care if it makes the world easier. I don't care if it makes travel easier. I'm uneasy about sitting in a Cadillac and having it just take off in the sky. No thank you. I want to be sitting in traffic, screaming at people and getting angry that someone doesn't know how to use a blinker.
Not to mention there's just way too much shit that can go wrong. Think about everything that goes wrong with a regular ass car. I'm not even talking about running low on gas or an oil change. I'm talking a transmission, a gasket, break pads, etc. Now add that to a FLYING car and I'm terrified. Don't get me wrong, I get airplanes can have those problems but there's something comforting about a gigantic metal thing in the sky vs this. I can't explain it. It makes no sense, but my brain doesn't make much sense. Oh and the last thing I trust? Voice commands and hand gesture commands. We all own Siri, Alexa, whatever. That shit doesn't listen now I'm supposed to believe a car listens? That's a recipe for disaster.
Here's a question though. I've heard from my grandparents that back in the day you knew you made it once you got a Cadillac. I can't confirm where it came from, but both grandfathers told me that. I own a SUV and a Honda Civic, can't say I've made it I guess. But is the new way of making it getting a Cadillac flying car? I think it might be. You just spit down on those regular ass Cadillac's.
Here's my argument though. These things should be able to drive AND fly. We saw Japan release something similar:
I need a real looking car that can also fly. Until we get that, I won't believe we're officially in the future. Sometimes you just want to drive with the windows down. You can't go windows down, Eric Church up in the air. Not at 55mph. Keep my ass firmly on the ground. Go ahead and fly over me, I'll be in my Civic enjoying my music.
