A Guy On A Bike Rode Past A Woman On A Crosswalk And Casually Stole Her Phone In Broad Daylight

Gothamist – This video was captured by a dashcam on July 8th at approximately 5:30 p.m. The nefarious action begins at the intersection of 7th Street and Avenue A, and continues south, to points unknown.

Cohen says an unidentified friend took the video, adding that “we don’t know the outcome. Hopefully she got her phone back.” But it appears that a Citi Bike user who rode by moments after the robbery did help pursue the perp, and Cohen’s friends tried to help as well. The driver is heard telling the female passenger that he intends to follow the thief. She says, roughly translated from Cantonese, “It’s really too bad about that woman’s phone.”

Typical bicyclist thinking everything on the road belongs to them. The thing I don’t get is did this guy just have a mental break moment where he thought “Fuck it, I can take this chick’s phone and make a few hundred bucks” or is this just his thing where he’s rolling around East Village crosswalks all day hoping that his riding through will time up with someone not paying attention? If it’s the latter, it sounds like this guy needs to learn a little bit about the economic principle of the value of your own time.

Also the Citibike dude trying to help out is obviously a way better human than you or I but his little “Hold on incoming traffic, a hero is born” gesture cracked me up:

The bicyclist thief deserves a stiff punishment regardless of what happened in the aftermath but I say if a guy on Citibike catches him, he deserves the death penalty. You might as well get stopped by a dude on a Phunkee Duck at that point.
