Comparing DK Metcalf to Calvin Johnson Is So Disrespectful I Can't Even Comprehend It

After Jim Schwartz's apparent comment to D.K. Metcalf before last night's Eagles-Seahawks game, all the rage today is comparing Metcalf to the greatest receiver of all-time. And to be honest with you, I've had just about enough of it.

I don't care what anybody says, Calvin Johnson is the greatest wide receiver to ever play football. There are a few guys who have put up better numbers after playing longer with far better teams and quarterbacks, but there has never been anybody better at his peak than Johnson was during his. He dominated everybody in the League.

And don't get me wrong, Metcalf is awesome. He has the makings to be the best receiver in the NFL in a year or two. But that doesn't mean it's acceptable to be comparing him to Megatron in his second season. Everybody on Twitter is going cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs sending out all these stats of the pair's first 27 games like that's a fair way to judge them. Metcalf has had a Hall of Fame quarterback throwing to him for his entire career, while the starting quarterbacks in Johnson's first two seasons were Jon Kitna, Dan Orlovsky and Dante Culpepper. Not exactly apples to apples there.

And even under those circumstances, Johnson was torching opposing defenses. He led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in his second season on a winless team. Metcalf is putting up slightly better numbers after being dropped into one of the best organizations in professional sports with an incredibly talented quarterback and elite head coach. It's a lot easier to put up those numbers under those conditions than the ones Johnson was provided in Detroit.

Some of you youngsters need to go back and watch one of the best to ever do it before you start spouting off about how great every new shiny toy that comes along is.

Editor's Note: When I opened this blog I never anticipated reading that Big T thinks Calvin Johnson is the greatest WR of all time. I'm not even mad at it. It's wildly wrong, but I don't hate the take one bit. Especially when he then started berating the youngsters! Incredible. Simply incredible.
