I Don't Hate Cam Newton's Response When He Was Asked About His Fashion Choice
I'm not here to argue with Kevin. Frankly I don't get his harsh, anti-Lederhosen rhetoric. To me, these Bavarian shorts-and-suspenders combinations outfits have brought a lot of joy into this otherwise drab, dreary vale of tears we all pass through. From the Von Trapp kids to Oompah Bands to the people at Oktoberfests to these Alphorn players he has so much contempt for. Or to this guy:
We're all born alone and we all die alone. So in between you ought to know the pleasures of decorative shorts with knee socks topped off with a nice Tyrolean hat.
But like I said, I'm not here to start arguments. On the contrary, I sympathize with KFC in a lot of ways. It's Thanksgiving week and my team is under .500 for the first time since before my voting age son was born. I can't imagine what it's like to live like this. I imagine it would give a person a person a pretty critical outlook on life to do this year after year after interminable year. Believe me, I was in no mood for Cam Newton's cutting edge fashion after he led a drive that went 16 plays, 75 yards, took 9:25 and ended with a field goal. But I was thinking emotionally, not rationally. After 20 seasons of dealing with a fashion-forward quarterback who made some curious choices, I need to be a little more understanding when it comes to having a clothes horse under center every week.
I realized that after hearing what Newton said when he was asked about his choice of Kniebundhosen this morning:
Dare I say, that's more than just a good answer. It's flat out inspirational. I mean, aren't the messages "Be true to yourself" and "Dare to be different" and "Don't be afraid to express yourself" pretty much the point of every "Afterschool Special"? Patriots fans can't pick and choose whether to be OK with a quarterback's pre- and postgame attire based on what the scoreboard says. We either believe you should be uniquely you regardless of whether you got a W or not and the world will be a better place.
I appreciate the positivity of Newton's answer. And I say that as a guy whose entire wardrobe is 75% Patriots gear. And whose Spirit Animal/best friend dresses like this in public:
Because that's uniquely him being his uniquely him self. Einstein might have famously kept an entire closest of the exact same suit so that he never had to use up any brain power on what to wear. But that's not Cam's style. Maybe if Einstein wore more lederhosen, he'd have come up with that Unified Field Theory that eluded him. Who knows? All we know for sure is Newton had a good game and an even better ensemble. It's just a damned shame he didn't get to wear it on a victorious flight home.
