Dallas News- In a grueling 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifier, against a field fortified by PGA Tour winners, on an old-school golf course that hosted the 1952 U.S. Open, a 15-year-old stole the show. Houston’s Cole Hammer birdied four of his final five holes to cap the afternoon round of 2-under 68 at Northwood Club in Dallas. He finished one stroke behind medalist Mark Silvers, a Web.com Tour player from Thunderbolt, Ga. Hammer will be the fourth-youngest golfer ever to compete in the U.S. Open when the tournament takes place June 18-21 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.

Two things.  One, Cole Hammer is one of the best sports names ever.  We need this kid to succeed so we can tweet things like “HAMMER TIME!” during golf tournaments.  It just needs to happen.  It’d be a cruel joke for us to find out who this kid is and then not have him be a longtime tour pro.  Cole Hammer has to be successful.  Cole Hammer doesn’t work at McDonald’s.  Cole Hammer doesn’t show you different light fixtures at Home Depot.  Cole Hammer wins golf tournaments and steals your girlfriend when you’re not looking.  That’s what Cole Hammer does.  Cole Hammer is the name you’d give a baseball player you created on MLB The Show modeled after Babe Ruth.  It’s almost too perfect to be real.  But it is.  Second, I guess being 15 years old and qualifying for the U.S. Open is pretty cool.  That’ll make your parents proud.  I wonder what that’s like.  I hope Cole wins (he obviously won’t). Or at least has a decent showing.  That’d be a fun storyline on Thursday and Friday next week.  Either way, I’m buying all the Cole Hammer stock I can simply because of his name.  Make me proud, son!
