(VIDEO) At 64 I Can Still Spin the Cranks...

After I blew out my knee plumbing and shattered my big toe taking a line drive from 46 feet pitching in a home run derby, running was no longer an option.  For a while I walked 6 miles a day, but even wearing headphones (no buds back then) and listening to some classic rock, I found myself getting pretty bored.

Then, while installing a zone of baseboard heat in a friend's basement I needed to move his bicycle out of the way and couldn't believe how light it was. It was a red Cannondale made of oversized aluminum tubing. I was amazed, the last bike I had was an old Phillips 10 speed and it was heavy as fuck.

My buddy told me I should start riding and for my 40th birthday I bought a rigid mountain bike and started to train. After going on a few group rides and keeping up with some of the experienced riders, I bought a used road bike. Over the years I've owned lots of bikes, mostly road bikes, but the one in the video is one I've owned since 1996. It's a 1986 Fuji Club 12 speed with an old school lugged steel frame, down tube shifters, and some upgraded the components.

I've been doing the same 20-mile loop for 24 years, and at 64, I've slowed considerably, but not enough that I can't keep up and pass most riders.

Check out the video. Yes, I've put on the COVID ten, but I can still spin the cranks!
