Someone Just Paid a Record $1.8 MILLION for a Giannis Antetokounmpo Card
A few months ago, I was appalled to learn someone paid $900,000 for a Mike Trout rookie card. Well that now seems like quite a reasonable amount, given that someone has now paid more than double that for a Giannis Antetokounmpo card. The signed card also features the NBA Logoman patch from a jersey worn during Antetokounmpo's rookie season.
I still don't really understand the whole card market, but I think it's just because I'm too poor for my brain to able to rationalize spending nearly $2 million on a trading card. I just still don't get it. Somewhere in my mind it makes sense that a Giannis signed card has value, but then I see the price and my brain short-circuits.
The card becomes the most expensive basketball card in history, edging out a LeBron James rookie card which sold for $1.8 million in July. I don't understand how any current player would have a card more valuable than LeBron's, but I also don't really understand this market at all.
I'm just thinking about how often I'd have to look at a piece of cardboard I spent $1.8 million on and how many people I'd have to show it to for it to be worth it. And it's a lot.
