So What's The Deal With Soccer Team Names Anyway?

The MLS has been expanding like crazy lately. In the past 5 years there have been 8 new teams to join the league and another 4 are on the way.

New York City, Orlando City, Atlanta, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Miami, Nashville, Austin, Charlotte, Sacramento Republic and St. Louis City. That's an incredible amount of growth in such a short span of time.

Do you care to guess what pretty much every single team is called?

Out of the twelve, 8 of them are FC. Another 3 of them are SC. And the only one that strays from the pack a little bit is Miami who went with the Inter Miami CF for a little Latin flair. (I'll also give Atlanta and Minnesota a little credit here by going with "United FC" instead of just FC).

Now I realize this isn't an MLS thing. This is soccer thing. This is a European thing. I get that. I just don't get why. And it's just a genuine question I have. I don't even really have anything to say about it, I'm just curious as to what's the deal with soccer team names. Is it because they just have too much pride in their city to name the team anything else? Is it because someone just got fed up with trying to come up with a cool name one day so they just went with "FC" and then everybody realized how much easier that would be? Just the ultimate mailtime move that ended up becoming a staple in the sport? I'm genuinely curious here. I guess I should probably pass this question along to Sam's Army. Or maybe the Sports Ecyclopedia will have an answer for me. Or best case scenario, we put Rust Cohle on the case.

Fuckin' McConnaughey, man. Coolest bastard on the planet.
