Oh, You Thought 2020 Didn't Have Bubonic Plague Up Its Sleeve?

CNN — Authorities in the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia are on high alert after a suspected case of bubonic plague, the disease that caused the Black Death pandemic, was reported Sunday.

The case was discovered in the city of Bayannur, located northwest of Beijing, according to state-run Xinhua news agency. A hospital alerted municipal authorities of the patient's case on Saturday. By Sunday, local authorities had issued a citywide Level 3 warning for plague prevention, the second lowest in a four-level system. The warning will stay in place until the end of the year, according to Xinhua.

Yep, that checks out. Just go ahead and toss 2020 Comeback Player of the Year bubonic plague on the heaping pile of shit that is this year.

At this point, you could write literally any story about something happening in the next six months and I would believe it, no questions asked. I can't even think of what the craziest examples of what I would believe would be, because I would honestly believe absolutely anything.

If there is some mitigating news to accompany the fact that the plague is back, it's that it never actually left. A couple thousand cases are still reported every year, and there are usually a handful in the United States. But if ever there was a time for the bubonic plague to make its triumphant return to the world stage, it picked a hell of a moment.
