Bono Writes 60 Fan Letters To Celebrate His 60th Birthday
Bono turned 60 years old on Sunday, and he’s celebrating by writing 60 separate fan letters to his musical heroes, everyone from the Beatles and the Ramones to Beyoncé and Billie Eilish. “These are some of the songs that saved my life,” he wrote. “The ones I couldn’t have lived without… the ones that got me from there to here, zero to 60… through all the scrapes, all manner of nuisance, from the serious to the silly… and the joy, mostly joy.”
You know what I'm not doing if/when I turn 60? It's writing 60 GD letters to anybody. Or even 6. I'm gonna stuff my face at Santarpio's like I do every birthday then smoke up again.
So kudos to Bono for being grateful enough to undertake this venture. It's a pretty cool gesture and might even turn you onto some good shit. I know U2 has taken some heat ever since they hardwired everyone's iPhone with a free album. And it has been a minute since they had a killer album.
But even if U2's next five albums were just Yoko Ono screeching, their legacy is pretty secure as titans of rock history. Their St. Patrick's Day show in 1992 at the Garden was the first time I realized a concert coulld be a near-religious experience. And I've never seen them have a bad show (granted, I skipped the last couple of tours because they were so new album-heavy).
Oh and "The Joshua Tree" still slays.
Happy 60th, Bono.
