RIP Don Shula

The NFL and Miami Dolphins have lost a great today, as Don Shula passed away at the age of 90. Shula played for Paul Brown with the Cleveland Browns and got his first job as head coach with the Baltimore Colts in 1963. He led Baltimore to Super Bowl III, where they were upset by the New York Jets 16-7. 

In 1970, Don Shula left the Colts for the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins did not win more than five games in their first four seasons, in Shula's first season they made the playoffs with a record of 10-4. A year later the Dolphins went to Super Bowl VI, losing to the Dallas Cowboys 24-3. It would be their last loss for a year as the Dolphins completed the only unbeaten season in NFL history, winning Super Bowl VII against the Washington Redskins 14-7. The Dolphins would also win Super Bowl VIII beating the Minnesota Vikings 24-7. In total Shula led the Dolphins to five Super Bowl appearances. 

Don Shula became the NFL's all-time winningest coach on November 14, 1993, breaking the record held by George Halas of 325 wins. Following the 1995 season, Don Shula was pushed aside for Jimmy Johnson announcing his retirement. Don Shula posted a record of 347-173-6 including the postseason. In 33 years as a coach between Miami and Baltimore he only had two losing seasons.
