How Do You Make Your Grilled Cheese?

OK so I know you normally see basketball blogs from me where you can tell me how much you don't care and blah blah blah but I need the stoolies to weigh in on something real quick. I don't know about you, but as I've gotten older I've become way more of a home cook. In fact I pride myself on being pretty damn good. I wouldn't say I've earned my own cooking series or anything but I know my way around a kitchen. You may remember an older blog I once wrote about making bacon in the oven (the only way to make it) as opposed to a skillet. Part of this is because I hate spending money, but also it's something I enjoy.

This is relevant because I just made myself some delicious grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato bisque for a late for lunch. Well here's the purpose of this blog. My entire life up until about a week ago I made my grilled cheese a certain way. I buttered each slice of bread and then put it in the skillet. I feel like that's how I always saw my mom do it so I never even considered any other option. Her grilled cheeses might have been the most delicious thing I ever tasted growing up so I was certain she knew the ideal way to make them.

But then something happened. I was making dinner (homemade reuben, get a crock pot and do this) while my girlfriend was FaceTiming with her older sister. She saw me start to butter both slices of bread and immediately made me stop. She asked what the hell I was doing, I told her, and I may as well have told her I killed her dog. She was absolutely disgusted. Why? Well see sometimes butter is still cold when you take it out of the fridge and it's a real bitch to spread on fresh bread. This was the case so I was putting it in the microwave for like 5 seconds to soften it up. That's when she hit me with a much better idea.

Instead of buttering the bread, put the butter in the skillet so it melts, THEN put the sandwich in. You know, like at a diner. I'll admit, the thought had never crossed my mind in the 33 years (shoutout Larry Legend) I've been on this planet and I've made a LOT of grilled cheese/reubens/patty melts in my day.

I fully understand that I might just be a moron and this is something that everyone else has always done. But part of me thinks there are a lot of stoolies that were just like me and butter the bread. Am I crazy?

I'll tell you what though, I used her method on today's lunch and I don't think I can go back. I'll note it does take a little more effort because you have to put in a new slice of butter when you flip, but if you've never gone with this method I highly recommend it.

So, stoolies, settle the debate. Are you Team Buttered Bread or Team Buttered Skillet?

P.S.

Yeah I wrote a grilled cheese blog. What of it? We aren't content shaming during this quarantine and I'm genuinely curious what people are doing.
