Video: Wrestler Heaven Fitch Beats The Boys To Win NC High School State Wrestling Championship
Heaven Fitch is a high school junior at Uwharrie Charter Academy in Asheboro, NC, and she also happens to be the new North Carolina state champ for her weight division (106lb). Following a 54 - 5 record for the season, she beat seven male wrestlers in the final competition this past Saturday. She also won 'most outstanding' wrestler in her division.
From The Guardian:
Fitch became interested in wrestling after watching her older brothers competing, and fought against them when she was younger. She said at first she had to convince her parents to let her wrestle. “I nagged my parents, basically, because I wanted to do what [my brothers] did,” Fitch told the Independent Tribune in 2018. “They didn’t want me to wrestle. I’m pretty sure it was because they didn’t want me to get hurt. But I would just be like, ‘Well, if they can do it, then I should be able to do it.’”
On Saturday, her perseverance paid off. “I just wrestled my best, and I kind of dominated the match, if I’m being honest,” Fitch told WTVD.
She's now ranked top 10 nationally for the women's division so she'll be starting up again next week getting ready for other tournaments. Watching some of her interviews on YouTube I loved seeing her confidence and 'why not me?' attitude. She wasn't surprised at her wins & says she trained hard and went into all these matches knowing she was going to beat these guys.
Side note - I know from personal experience that North Carolina women know how to wrestle after an NC lady named Carla whooped my ass at Talladega Speedway in front of dozens of NASCAR drivers & hundreds of fans. Knowing how fast I went down, this video is still cringeworthy for me to watch....
Not only did she destroy me in a painfully short amount of time, she came looking for Dave the next day to make sure she got the money I promised her (I told her Dave would give her $500 without ever asking Dave first, ha ha) ASAP.
But thankfully after that we became fast friends & we both put our livers in a headlock on a boozy pedal bike ride around the infield.
As for Fitch, I doubt she'll ever wind up in the BBQ Sauce Circuit but can easily see her going on to much greater things in the future… Things even greater than KB's Wrestling All-Ear Team. Olympic gold medalist Helen Maroulis was quick to give her a shoutout, and I wouldn't be surprised if someday Fitch is an Olympic medalist encouraging the next generation, too.
In closing, cue the babydicks in comment sections on every story about this making snarky comments because they feel inadequate in a vast array of ways.
