PSA: Wash Your Damn Hands

So the Coronavirus is here to remind us what many of us were taught before we could speak in full sentences: we should be washing our hands with soap. If you remember the steps on that chart in the bathroom of your Elementary School then go ahead and stop reading now. Just go do it. Americans are counting on you.

Follow these 5 simple steps every time you want to save a life, I mean wash your hands (via CDC):

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

And to all of you "hand sanitizer heroes" out there:

But if hand sani is your only option, then please:

That seems simple enough, right? I'm pretty passionate about washing my hands. Obviously not while I'm at home; those are my germs. But while at work. In New York City. On and off subway trains. In and out of coffee shops. In and out of NY Penn Station. As Americans, we all have to at least try to do a better job of not dying from the Coronavirus. And surprisingly enough, the solution is in everyone's wheelhouse. We just got to wash our damn hands.

For all of you traveling outside of the country, wash your damn hands and be advised. The New York Times put together a Coronavirus Map, tracking the spread of the virus around the world:

"The coronavirus outbreak has sickened more than 83,700 people, according to official counts. As of Friday morning, at least 2,858 people have died, all but 70 in mainland China."

We really just have to take the 90 extra seconds, every time we're in the bathroom or kitchen, to get them germs up off you. I know it can be inconvenient saving American lives by running your dirty hands under warm water, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say it'll probably be worth it.

If those 5 steps from earlier were too hard to follow, let's take a look at some images to further articulate the handwashing process:

If your hands aren't feeling clean enough after that, consider your fellow Americans and neutralize the Coronavirus any way you can.

But please, just wash your damn hands.

Thanks in advance.
